This was a Pre-K Autism class where I was Substitute Teacher for CCSD, here in NV, back in November. It was amazing because the Special Education Teacher Assistant said it would be great if I could set up a coloring area and leave it set up throughout the day to see if the kids were into it. They'd had a few challenging days recently and the thought was coloring might capture some of the kids attention more so than the usual program and if so, the day may go a little better than the last ones had.
It was an amazing day, and most of the kids were totally into coloring and stayed and or returned to this table throughout most of the day. One of the kids was wearing a protective device to avoid any injury to his head because he moves pretty quickly and can find himself in surprise situations sometimes. He's non-verbal and ended coming over to sit with me and the other kids to color.
This was the only time I saw him sit and stay still for long stretches of time. He went over to a bookcase where I had spread out about 30 images for the kids to choose from. They would come back to this main table to color and check out everyones' projects. He picked out the cow on the back of the table, you can see here. He said on my knee and used my hands to hold the crayons for him, then he would use my hand to move the crayons where he wanted to color.
We worked on maybe 4-5 different animal pages this way including the Fennec Fox.
The Zebra artist carefully colored using every crayon in the whole set of crayons on the table, to make sure the zebra wasn't in black and white.
One student made sure to keep bringing everyone at the table snacks, lunch, and homemade tortillas to keep up our strength throughout the day.I'll post more pics of this day, it was lovely.
Search for "tortillas" to find our lunches prepared lovingly by a student who likes taking care of his friends and his Substitute Teacher.
