The Failure Pattern

Updated: Apr 26

I've worked in a lot of different industries to understand as many perspectives as possible. I discovered a common pattern almost everywhere I go.

I wonder if you've seen something like this before. If you have, write me a note so we can chat about it, and I can potentially feature your take on TFP with a wider audience.

A new leader joins the company and gathers everyone to hear, support, and follow their big idea.

They say it must be done by a specific date, no exceptions!

Department leads load up their teams to leave the station.

They race toward the work and away from each other to hit the deadline.

Once they're far enough away from each other they start trying to discuss what the big idea was.

It's hard to explain, but someone must know.

Meanwhile, the headless idea is eating a lot of resources and the clock is ticking.

The leader checks in to ask, "Hey teams! When can I see my idea, who's got a demo to show me?!"

Teams panic because no one has any demos yet and they need to get some really fast.

Everyone races toward the deadline.

A few brave souls warn of fast-approaching failures but they're silenced for fears of retribution.

The deadline is a time bomb.

The date was heavily marketed so a lot of people are watching the deadline.

The Failure Pattern reaches the impact phase with negative results cascading far and wide.

It takes a while for the storm to pass and the dust to settle.

When it does consultants are hired to investigate, document lessons learned, and report back all the important findings like who, what, where, when, why and how this train wreck occurred with so many wasted resources.

A new leader comes in talking about efficiency, cleaning house, working with leaner teams, and doing more with less in order to avoid this trainwreck ever happening again.

People who were just following orders, anyone who sounded alarms, and some leaders are laid off and blamed for the trainwreck.

The new leader gathers smaller teams together so everyone can hear, support, and follow their new idea.

The End - or is it The Beginning?
