This may not seem like a big deal, but it took a ton of tenacity and persistence to push the city to finally start doing something to make the intersection of Cole & Foothill safer for community members. Multiple people had been struck and died recently in that intersection so our messaging, specific asks, and commitment to get action finally got results.
This was the street before the OAKDOT / OPD came in to straighten things out.
This is Warren, Mayor Schaff's lead on Transportation, who came down to hang out one Friday night at a community member's house right at Foothill and Cole to witness first hand the drivers hurtling down Foothill 90-100 mph in the rain. He knew it was bad but you just can't relate until you really see it for yourself. He sat with us and drew pictures of traffic treatments he thought might help in Melrose, noting these are not overnight solutions but if we kept going with our vision and traffic safety roadmaps the city might be able to align funding initiatives to work on Melrose in the coming years.
