Engaging Art Activities for Kids: A Fun Classroom Experience

Updated: Dec 30, 2025

Creative Learning in the Classroom

Recently, I had the opportunity to work at an elementary school within CCSD. The kids were lively and curious, eager to explore various topics. However, a few students struggled to stay focused and follow class rules, especially since a substitute teacher was present for a couple of days.

I always stick to the lesson plans when they are available. However, it seemed like the students were more interested in doing other things. Despite this, I made sure we stayed on schedule each day. I wanted to ensure that the students completed their assignments so their regular teacher wouldn’t lose any ground during their absence.

Challenges in Keeping Attention

By the second day, it became increasingly challenging to keep the kids focused. Managing behavior issues was also a task that required constant attention. I noticed some students doodling on paper after finishing their assignments. This sparked an idea in my mind. I thought, why not introduce some of my coloring pages that I had been working on for other projects?

I shared with the students that I had extra copies of these coloring pages. I told them that those who followed class rules and didn’t disrupt the class would get to pick a page featuring different animals or insects to take home. The excitement in the room was palpable! Although we didn’t have time to color during class, everyone left with a coloring page to enjoy at home.

The Power of Coloring as a Reward

This experience got me thinking. Perhaps I should share these coloring pages more often as a reward for students who finish their work early and adhere to class rules. It could be a fun way to encourage good behavior and creativity.

I started brainstorming how I could incorporate short bursts of coloring into our schedule. Maybe we could take 5-10 minutes between learning topics or before breaks to allow the kids to express their creativity. This could serve as a refreshing break and a way to keep them engaged.

Benefits of Art in Education

Art activities, like coloring, offer numerous benefits for children. They help improve fine motor skills, enhance creativity, and provide a calming effect. Engaging in artistic activities can also boost a child’s confidence and self-esteem. When kids see their finished artwork, it gives them a sense of accomplishment.

Incorporating art into the classroom can make learning more enjoyable. It allows students to express themselves and explore their imaginations. As I reflect on my time in the classroom, I realize that integrating art can transform the learning experience.

Conclusion: Inspiring Creativity

In conclusion, my time at the elementary school taught me valuable lessons about engaging students through art. By introducing coloring pages as a reward, I found a way to motivate the kids and foster their creativity. I believe that art should be accessible to everyone, and it can play a vital role in education.
