Animal Farm

The barnyard is one of the first places children learn that the world is full of creatures with jobs to do — and Animal Farm honors that with 20 hand-drawn natural science illustrations rendered with the same care and precision as every wild animal in Stephanie Hayden's library. Cows, goats, pigs, horses, chickens, ducks, sheep, donkeys, and more — familiar enough to love immediately, detailed enough to keep looking.

Each animal can comes in two versions: Art Mode in clean outline for coloring, and White Mode in bold black fills that works beautifully as-is or offers a different creative challenge. Color them, cut them, make puppets, ornaments, jewelry, or gifts — self-directed, open-ended, and repeatable from age 3 to adult.

Farm animals have been living alongside humans for so long that children arrive already full of questions — they just haven't always had someone patient enough to sit down and let the questions come. This book won't answer them. It will hand a child a pencil, put an interesting animal in front of them, and let the questions find their own way out. Why do some cows have spots and some don't? Why does a goat eat everything in sight? Those conversations are worth having, and art has a way of starting them without anyone feeling put on the spot.

When the questions get serious, Animal Farm connects naturally to Phase 6 Research & Inquiry in the Art for Kids Program — where each animal becomes the subject of a W5 investigation: Who are they, What do they do, When and Where do they live, Why do they matter, and How do they fit into the larger ecosystem around them. A child who starts by coloring a cow and ends up researching cattle breeds, grazing patterns, and the history of domestication got there on their own curiosity.

That's the whole idea!
